Yeley, driver of the No. 96 DLP® HDTV Toyota Camry for Hall of Fame Racing, toured the 2.5-mile oval in 50.923 seconds at 176.737 mph.
“It was extremely tight,” said Yeley, who finished ninth in the 1998 Indianapolis 500 at IMS. “We fought just a little bit to tighten this yesterday in mid-corner, but other than that the car was really good. Today’s qualifying lap – the car was extremely tight on both exits, which really hurt straightaway speed. When the straightaways are three-quarters of a mile long and you don’t get off the corner very good, it’s a good way to lose a lot of time.
“I was a little bit worried because the car didn’t feel as good as it did yesterday. The track temperature was a little bit cooler, so I knew the race track was faster. Obviously, I knew we were going to pick up time. It’s just a matter of making sure I picked up enough.”
Forty-seven drivers attempted to qualify for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Those not making the cut in the 43-car field were Tony Raines, Bill Elliott, Johnny Sauter and Stanton Barrett.
The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard gets underway at 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday with live, high-definition coverage provided by ESPN beginning with its pre-race show at 1 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.
